One moment

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
Al-Aqsa
مخبز ومطعم الأقصى
Bread from the taboon, from morning until midnight.

The bread
The oven is the restaurant.
Pita, taboon, and laffa are baked here, not delivered in a plastic bag from somewhere else. The stone does the work. You can taste the char.

The fire
Shawarma, shaved to order.
Chicken on one spit, lamb on the other. The knife takes what is crisp at the edge and still juicy underneath, then the bread closes around it.

The table
A pond of olive oil.
The hummus is the dish people cross the borough for. Smooth, whipped, finished with oil and green shatta. Foul, musabaha, and baba ganoush sit beside it.

Our roots
Jerusalem, by way of Bay Ridge.
Manakish, ejja, kahek, and the grill are the cooking of a Palestinian home, practiced every day on 5th Avenue. Come hungry. Leave with bread.

“The hummus is less portable, but grab some to take home anyway. It comes topped with bright green shatta and olive oil, and it looks like a gorgeous, mossy pond.”
The Infatuation, 8.0, April 2023
“We prefer the laffa wrap with juicy, tender meat and crunchy pickles neatly packed inside.”
